Beaches
Fife has four of Scotland’s five Blue Flag beaches, at Elie Ruby Bay, Elie
Harbour, Burntisland and Kinghorn, as well as several Seaside Award beaches. Find
out more at: www.blueflag.org There are lots
more beautiful beaches though, and our favourites are St Andrews West Sands just
a ten minute drive from the Bothy, and Kingsbarns, a further ten minutes along the
coast towards Crail.
Castles, houses and gardens
There are many historic buildings and gardens within easy reach, including
Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle, Balmerino Abbey and Hill of Tarvit Mansion, all
at: www.nts.org.uk. Cambo House is famous for
its snowdrops in spring, with great walks and access to the beach all year round,
at: www.camboestate.com
Getting here and away
Fife has excellent transport links, although having a car will certainly make
it easier to explore the area. There’s a bus stop ten minutes’ walk from the Bothy,
with links to St Andrews in the east and Cupar in the west. The nearest train stations
are at Cupar (5 miles) and Leuchars (6 miles), both on the East Coast Main Line
with direct trains and good connections from London King’s Cross, Edinburgh and
Aberdeen. If you’re coming by plane, Dundee Airport (12 miles) has flights to London
City, Belfast and Birmingham, while Edinburgh Airport (50 miles) has connections
to most major UK cities and many European destinations. You’ll find more information
on how to get to the Bothy on the 'Rates' page.
